Overnight Ratings: NBC Sees Drop For Start To NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

The NBC broadcast network began its coverage of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs over the weekend. With the NHL beginning its playoffs two weeks later this season due to the lockout, direct comparisons to the same weekend last season would be for conference semifinal games. Looking back at comparable conference quarterfinal matchups in mid-April last year, the net still saw a decline for its three games over the weekend. Blackhawks-Wild Game 3 in the late window on Sunday topped all games with a 1.5 overnight Nielsen rating, down 35% from the comparable Penguins-Flyers Game 3 last year. In Sunday’s early window, Penguins-Islanders Game 3 earned a 1.4 overnight, down 7% from Predators-Red Wings Game 3. Rangers-Capitals Game 2 on Saturday afternoon earned a 1.2 overnight, down 20% from a 1.5 overnight for Capitals-Bruins Game 2 last year.

NOTES: ESPN earned a 1.6 overnight for Dodgers-Giants last night, marking the net’s highest-rated “Sunday Night Baseball” telecast this season to date.....Despite a 3.5-hour weather delay on Sunday, Fox finished with a 4.4 overnight for its coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Series Aaron’s 499 from Talladega Superspeedway.
