Time To Let Him Go: Columnist Says Boras Should Drop Efforts To Keep Cano

MLB agent Scott Boras should "turn the page" and let Yankees 2B Robinson Cano join Jay-Z' new sports agency "without a fight," according to Buster Olney of ESPN.com. Cano last week announced plans to join Roc Nation Sports, which is working with CAA Sports. Olney wrote about Boras, "Just move on. In the big picture, fighting to retain Cano, or a portion of his contract, will cost the agent more than it will gain him." If Boras "fights to retain Cano, either through lawsuits or the threat of lawsuits, it will get a lot of attention." Players will be "thinking: I should be able to do what I want to do. Why won't Boras let Cano have the agent he wants to have?" (ESPN.com, 4/6). The Boston Globe's Bob Ryan said, "Boras isn’t for everybody. It’s a one-stop shopping enterprise. He’d like to control every aspect of your life: Your financial, your fitness, God knows maybe your spiritual life ... and it’s a little smothering and he’s already lost a couple of clients because of that.” ESPN.com's Howard Bryant said Jay-Z “is an icon” and has “credibility with all these young athletes.” Bryant: “This isn’t Ricky Williams and Master P, and if he gets involved in this and does it the right way, he could be a powerhouse in this thing.” St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Brian Burwell said, “Don’t compare this to Master P because Jay-Z has his own empire.” Burwell said “everything that he touches is magic, and he’s backed by CAA” (“The Sports Reporters,” ESPN, 4/7).
