Minding My Business With NASCAR Digital Media Managing Dir John Martin

While NASCAR Digital Media Managing Dir JOHN MARTIN's workday consists of all things tech, he still prefers the traditional feel of a morning newspaper to start his day. From focusing on the upcoming race weekend to spending quality time with his dog, Maxwell, he is seemingly always on the go. Here, the UMass Sports Management grad opens up about his daily routine for this week's edition of "Minding My Business."

What I look for when interviewing a job candidate...
I look for what I consider to be stability. I try to look for capacity, and then I really try to determine the type of employee they would be. So I have specific questions that tell me whether they’re going to be someone who needs to be managed very closely, or if they’re a self starter, or if they’re a person who would need just minimal guidance. So I try to judge the role I’m interviewing for, what kind of personality I need. I learned a long time ago, there have been so many people I liked when I first met them. And I made that mistake early in my career, that doesn’t determine if they’re a good fit for the role you have.

Best advice I've ever received...
Your value is your network. It’s who you know and who you can call that makes you a valuable, productive employee. There have been so many times in my career where someone has asked me to solve a problem that I had no background in, but I was able to pick up a phone and call a classmate, a colleague, a friend of a friend in the industry and find someone that could specifically handle that sort of problem or opportunity I was given to solve. I got that in grad school at UMass, from DR. GLENN WONG. He was kind of one of the founders of the UMass sports management program.

Our industry needs more of...
I’d like to see sports take more interest in charitable work … the greater issues facing your region, country and the world. Sports has come leaps and bounds in that, but I think people in sports, the athletes are starting to realize the impact they can have to create positive change in the world.

First media I consume each day...
I am old school and so I actually look at the local newspaper, the Charlotte Observer. It’s on the doorstep and I’ll peruse a lot of things after that, but it’s the first thing I look at, front to back.

Best restaurant for a business lunch...
I am a Selwyn (Avenue) Pub man. It doesn’t matter who you are, you’re always welcome at the Selwyn Pub in Charlotte. Anyone can feel comfortable there.

Guilty pleasure...
Spending some time with my dog. He’s a little white terrier, Maxwell. Just spending a little boy time, the unconditional love from a dog makes me feel good.

Can't-miss TV show...
My daughter makes the whole family watch "The Bachelor" with her. We love to just make fun of that show and make fun of ourselves for watching that show. We also watch "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." We DVR it and always try and catch up on it, it’s a family thing as well even though I’m sure that makes me look like a bad parent with the language on the show.
