Study Shows Male Sports Fans Still Using Local Newspapers For Sports News, Information
Published March 19, 2013
Print newspapers top traditional media sports analysis as the “go to” source for consumption of sports information among male sports fans ages 18-54, according to data from the Newspaper National Network. An online poll conducted among 404 fans from Jan. 2-8 showed that 84% of all men 18-54 were sports fans, while 63% were “super fans.” When asked what places they would go for sports news and information -- not including live games -- 69% of respondents said the sports section of a newspaper, while 45% said ESPN’s “SportsCenter” and 42% said other sports reports on TV. Respondents were also asked specifically about digital sites they visit for sports news, with 76% saying a newspaper’s sports section website, 65% answering ESPN.com and 47% saying league-owned sites (NNN).
