Minding My Business With ESPN VP/Corporate Outreach Kevin Martinez

From browsing his favorite app, StumbleUpon, to downloading tracks from Pink Martini, new ESPN VP/Corporate Outreach KEVIN MARTINEZ' day is full of news, outreach and information as he goes from his West Hartford home to Bristol. This week, he was formally named to his new position, taking over for ROSA GATTI, who retired after 33 years with the company. Martinez said of Gatti's influence on him, "I guess more so than anything what I learned from her is that it is imperative to look at all things equally. Whether it’s people, whether it's resources, whether it's opportunity, one thing that Rosa is absolutely all about is fairness and equity." Martinez spoke to THE DAILY yesterday, helping to unveil our newest feature, "Minding My Business."

Most of my time at work is spent thinking about...
A lot of what we do is through our employees and with our employees, so that cultural piece is really what I think about: How is this going to play in Charlotte? How will our people in L.A. deal with this? Do they feel left out? Do they feel like if they read this they are looking at the Bristol campus?

Best advice I've ever received...
I worked for a guy named BOB NARDELLI, who was the CEO of Home Depot, and one of the things that he said that was most interesting to me was, when you’re trying to measure success, make sure you all agree on what that measurement looks like on the front end, because on the back end it will always change.

Our industry needs more of...
I would love to see the sports business industry continue to move towards relevant societal issues. ... If we lose sight of what our sports fan is dealing with everyday, then we’re not serving them to the greatest degree.

First media I consume each day...
It’s on my iPhone, or my iPad, I get up with a cup of coffee and I go to usually Google News for a quick search on just what’s happening on there. ... Then I go to the Huffington Post.

App I'm using the most...
I use an app that is a news search, and it’s called StumbleUpon. It basically is an app that you go on and you type in a favorite key word and it will bring up all of the articles and magazines or anything.

Best restaurant for a business lunch...
Rosa’s favorite restaurant was Cava, so that was kind of our off-site place, it’s an Italian restaurant that’s really close to our campus. I live in West Hartford, and my favorite place there is Besito, which is a Mexican-Central American restaurant.

Latest music download...
There’s a great band out of Portland called PINK MARTINI, and they are amazing. I think I downloaded their Greatest Hits in January.
