Notre Dame-UConn Football Game Possible For Fenway Park in '14

The Red Sox are “actively seeking to bring college football back to Fenway Park," specifically a Notre Dame-UConn game in ’14, according to Peter Abraham of the BOSTON GLOBE. Sources said that “talks are in the early stages,” but UConn officials “feel the idea has merit and Notre Dame may be willing to shift a home game to Boston.” Red Sox execs in March said that they were “looking for a high-profile game to play at Fenway Park.” UConn is “one of three FBS teams in New England, has regional appeal and is only 85 miles from Fenway,” while Notre Dame has a “national following and would bring a national television audience to the game.” There “hasn’t been a football game played" at Fenway Park since the Patriots beat the Bengals in Dec. '68 (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/18). In Connecticut, Mike DiMauro cites sources as saying that the game "would be considered Notre Dame's home game." Notre Dame has played a "number of 'home' games away from campus, including a game versus Maryland last year at Fed Ex Field in Landover, Md., Miami at Soldier Field in Chicago this season (Oct. 6) and Arizona State at Cowboys Stadium in 2013." There is a "burgeoning popularity for college football at ballparks." Northwestern and Illinois played at Wrigley Field in '10, while Rutgers played Army at Yankee Stadium last year (New London DAY, 9/18).
