Penn State Univ. President RODNEY ERICKSON said that the school is "adequately covered to handle lawsuits stemming from the sexual abuse scandal that has enveloped the campus." He said that the university "has general liability coverage like any institution of its size." Erickson: "We believe that we are adequately covered. In addition to that, we hope to be able to settle as many of these cases as quickly as possible" (AP, 7/28).

YOUTH MOVEMENT: In Charlotte, Caroline McMillan noted NFL Panthers Owner JERRY RICHARDSON, this year's honorary chairman of the Charlotte Observer's Summer Camp Fund, last week spent a morning at YMCA Camp Thunderbird answering questions from campers ages 11-16. Richardson, using a legal pad, "wrote five core values and showed them to the campers: hard work, harmony, teamwork, listen and respect." Richardson said that respect "is most important." He said that someone could work for the Panthers "without having a (perfect) 10 on the first four values." Richardson: "But I have zero tolerance if you don't show respect. That means respect for anybody -- friends, vendors, family" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/29).

TIME TO TANGO: ABC released its cast list for an "All-Star" edition of its "Dancing with the Stars" program. Participating in the competition will be IndyCar driver HELIO CASTRONEVES, former U.S. gymnast SHAWN JOHNSON, former NFLer EMMITT SMITH and U.S. speed skater APOLO ANTON OHNO (ABC).

NAMES: The NASCAR Foundation presented a $150,000 check to Halifax Health Medical Center's Speediatrics children's unit. NASCAR Foundation Exec Dir SANDY MARSHALL said that since its launch in '06, the NASCAR Foundation has "given about $13 million to charitable causes that benefit children" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 7/29)....Broncos DE ELVIS DUMERVIL presented one of his framed game jerseys to the family of late Staff Sgt. JESSE CHILDRESS following the team's practice yesterday.
