NBC's Stanley Cup Game Six Overnight Up From Comparable Bruins-Canucks Last Year

NBC earned a 4.0 overnight rating for the Kings’ Stanley Cup-clinching Game Six win over the Devils last night, up slightly from a 3.9 for Bruins-Canucks Game Six last year. The 4.0 marks the best overnight for the Kings-Devils series. The game earned a 13.6 local rating in L.A. (THE DAILY). AWFUL ANNOUNCING's Matt Yoder writes Kings-Devils "produced good hockey, but it was always going to struggle in the ratings." Yoder: "While it's a disappointment for the NHL, it shouldn't be treated as some kind of death blow. If we had Rays v Reds in the World Series and Pacers v Blazers, you'd be reading the same stories" (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 6/12).

THE DOC IS IN: NBC play-by-play announcer Mike Emrick drew praise from Twitter for his job during Kings-Devils Game Six. ESPN's Scott Van Pelt wrote, "If we were all as good at what we do as Doc Emrick is at what he does, we wouldn't appreciate how good he is at what he does." NBA Kings play-by-play announcer Gary Gerould wrote, "Doc Emrick does superb job creating perspective about achievement of winning Stanley Cup. Appreciative of his talent!!" Mavericks play-by-play announcer Chuck Cooperstein wrote, "I know I've said it before, but Mike Emrick is just freaking awesome. A poet. Wish I could turn phrases like that." BCKSTGR VP/Experiences Andrew Fine wrote, "How good is Doc Emrick? He just quoted Dan Aykroyd in Dragnet and absolutely nailed the cadence. They should put his name on the Cup too." WFAN-AM's Chuck Lopresti wrote, "Emrick really is remarkable. Love him or hate him, have to give him an A for effort and originality. You can tell he loves the game."

ON THE UPSWING: USA TODAY's Kevin Allen noted NBC's "willingness to help the league broadcast every playoff game for the first time in NHL history has been a game-changer." NHL COO John Collins said that he "sees other economic indicators, plus anecdotal evidence, to suggest that the league is on the right track to improve the visibility of the sport." Collins believes the Kings' first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final since '93 has "lit up" the L.A. marketplace. He also said that he "looks at ratings beyond the two competing cities." For example, he said that Pittsburgh is a "big driver of ratings because fans do watch NHL games not involving the Penguins." Collins said that it was "clear that the impediment to taking advantage of the Stanley Cup's reputation was to get every game on television" (USATODAY.com, 6/9).
