Penn State Univ. Friday announced the election of three new trustees. The school's alumni selected attorney and former PSU football player ADAM TALIAFERRO, A.P. Lubrano & Co. President ANTHONY LUBRANO and former U.S. Navy Seal RYAN MCCOMBIE. The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Kris Maher noted Lubrano was "among the board's most outspoken critics and said Mr. PATERNO's firing 'outraged and inspired me'" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/5).

Univ. of Kentucky basketball team meets
with President Obama at White House

CAT CALLS: The Univ. of Kentucky men's basketball team attended a ceremony Friday in the East Room of the White House in honor of the team's eighth NCAA championship. Former G DARIUS MILLER gave President BARACK OBAMA his No. 1 jersey (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 5/5)....Former Univ. of Kentucky F MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST announced on Twitter Saturday that he has signed with CAA Sports (TWITTER.com, 5/5).

ISLAND LIVING: In Vancouver, Mike Beamish noted Senators Owner EUGENE MELNYK "retreated to Barbados" soon after his team lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Melynk and friend BERT INNISS co-own the NHL-themed Bert's Bar on the island. The Senators have also constructed a replica of Bert's Bar at Scotiabank Place, "complete with imported beach sand and aluminum palm trees" (VANCOUVER SUN, 5/5).

MARK IT DOWN: Mavericks Owner MARK CUBAN was profiled on ABC’s “Nightline” with ABC’s Bill Weir noting the Mavericks are the “only professional sports franchise with an owner more famous than any of its players.” Weir: “Mark Cuban is nothing like most billionaires, which maybe why he's no longer considered just a lucky loudmouth who bought the lowly Dallas Mavericks. … Some people need attention, others need money. Cuban says the only thing he's ever needed is the thrill of the deal.” Weir said Cuban “has mellowed noticeably over the years,” but to watch a Mavericks game with him “is to see fan zeal pegged at 11” ("Nightline," ABC, 5/4).

IN MEMORY: Former Rams and Buccaneers exec DICK BEAM, 75, died of cancer Thursday. Beam helped organize the NFL's American Bowl in London ('87), Tokyo ('89) and Berlin ('90). He also served as a consultant to the NFL at 29 Super Bowls, including last year (AP, 5/5).
