Marketplace Roundup

In New Jersey, Sid Dorfman notes NFL Jets QB Tim Tebow is not “poor” in marketing opportunities, but signing with the N.Y. team allows him “the potential to become wealthy enough to buy his own team.” Tebow had to be “made aware that marketing powers were gearing up to peddle him as a product,” and there is “nothing un-Christian about making an honest buck.” N.Y. is “where it can happen for Tebow before he throws his first pass.” Dorfman writes, “It won’t be a Tiger Woods portfolio, but I think he was pushed toward Manhattan by advisers who tie income to yards gained passing.” A “major consideration in Tebow’s case is his personality.” He flashes it “everywhere, on and off the football field, along with his highly audible religion" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 3/28).

TRENDING TENNIS: In Miami, Linda Robertson looks at the appeal of Maria Sharapova under the headline “Maria Sharapova’s Beauty Begins With Her Game, Not Her Looks,” and notes the WTA is promoting its brand with a “Strong Is Beautiful” campaign that features “photos and videos of players dressed in shiny tunics wearing makeup and jewelry with lots of unclasped hair flying around." Robertson: "What are they doing in this attire? They’re playing tennis!” Robertson writes, “That’s the problem. The photos aim to soften or disguise their athleticism rather than celebrate it. They are depicting women in getups as impractical for athletic movement as the corset or burkha” (MIAMI HERALD, 3/28).

A HELPING HAND: Zurich Financial Services, which sponsors the PGA Tour's annual stop in New Orleans, announced this week that it is partnering again with golfer Ben Crane on a “Driving it Home” campaign to “raise money for the St. Bernard Project, a local nonprofit that has been rebuilding homes since Hurricane Katrina devastated the area in 2005.” Last year’s program “raised $25,000” (NOLA.com, 3/26).
