NFLPA Expected To Vote On New Player President At Annual Meeting This Weekend

The NFLPA begins the second day of its annual meetings in Marco Island, Fla., today and players are expected to vote Sunday on a new player president and fill the seats of three exec committee members in elections. About 60 active players were present at the meeting Thursday and others are expected to arrive Friday and Saturday. Because of the free agent signing period in the NFL, some players were visiting with prospective new teams or meeting with their new teams. It was expected that NFLPA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith would also stand for re-affirmation on Sunday, but since no other candidate stepped forward to challenge him, Player President Kevin Mawae, in his report to the players, nominated Smith for re-election and players voted unanimously to do so. Mawae, who was first elected to his position in '08, cannot stand for re-election because he was not an active player last year. Other players on the exec committee who have retired and cannot stand for re-election are Sean Morey, Tony Richardson and Mike Vrabel. The players could take other action at the meeting, including changing or eliminating the union's "junior rule," which prohibits agents from having contact with college underclassmen. On Monday, the NFLPA is scheduled to have a joint meeting with active players and retired players.
