Penn State Univ. said yesterday that it has "incurred nearly $3.2 million in legal, consultant, and public relations fees" as a result of the sexual abuse case against former assistant football coach JERRY SANDUSKY. The university noted that a "small portion of the cost is expected to be recovered through insurance policies," but the rest "will be covered with money other than tuition, taxpayer money, or alumni donations" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 2/14).

ON THE RECORD: In DC, Steven Goff cited a '10-11 U.S. Soccer Federation tax document as indicating that former men's national team coach BOB BRADLEY "earned $400,000 in bonuses over a period encompassing the 2010 World Cup, raising his compensation to almost $1 million." The document also indicated that USSF Secretary General & CEO DAN FLYNN received $603,803; Managing Dir of Administration TOM KING $244,605; General Counsel LISA LEVINE $198,802; Chief Administrative Officer BRIAN REMEDI $190,489; and CFO ERIC GLEASON $189,213 (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 2/13).

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS: Pro Football HOFer ROGER STAUBACH will receive the '11 Lamar Hunt Award for Professional Football, which honors the life and legacy of LAMAR HUNT while recognizing people who have helped shape the NFL into the preeminent sports league in the U.S. (KANSASCITY.com, 2/13)....MLS Timbers Owner MERRITT PAULSON was selected as the "Sportsperson of the Year" for '11 at the Oregon Sports Awards event held Sunday (OREGONLIVE.com, 2/13)....Maverik Lacrosse Founder & President JOHN GAGLIARDI inducted into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse HOF last weekend (Maverik).

CHARITY STRIPE: In L.A., Mike DiGiovanna notes the Pujols Family Foundation's "primary focus is to enrich the lives of families of children with Down syndrome, and to minister to impoverished families in the Dominican Republic." The foundation in '11 "staged 63 events that included father-son fishing trips and bowling nights, mother-daughter teas, cooking, theater, music and dance classes, all-star basketball and baseball games, and a celebrity golf tournament." The foundation has "expanded its efforts in the Dominican, joining forces with Compassion International to send teams of doctors, dentists and optometrists on annual medical relief trips." The foundation's Project Sound Asleep "delivers 70-80 mattresses a year to people with no beds" (L.A. TIMES, 2/14).

NAMES: On Long Island, Mark La Monica notes the continued struggle "to legalize mixed martial arts in the state of New York started yet another run with an easy passing by the Senate committee for Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation on Monday" (NEWSDAY, 2/14)....UFC fighter ALISTAIR OVEREEM has signed with sports management and marketing company Authentic Sports Management (ASM)....NFL Giants WRs VICTOR CRUZ and MARIO MANNINGHAM, along with actress PAULEY PERRETTE, presented the award for Best Rock Performance at the Grammys on Sunday (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 2/13). Patriots Owner ROBERT KRAFT also attended the Grammys as the guest of CBS President & CEO LES MOONVES (BOSTON HERALD, 2/14)....Giants RB BRANDON JACOBS recently taped an appearance for "TNA Impact Wrestling," in which he will "step into the ring against KURT ANGLE for a match that will air on Thursday night on Spike TV" (N.Y. POST, 2/14)....ANNE BUFORD, the younger sister of Spurs GM R.C. BUFORD, will make her directorial debut with the film "ELEVATE," which focuses on "four teenagers from an elite basketball boarding school called SEEDS (Sports for Education and Economic Development in Senegal) Academy in Dakar." The film "conveys how athletics are a bridge, sturdy or not, between" cultures in the U.S. and Africa. R.C. On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth.
