ROLLING STONE named TNT’s CHARLES BARKLEY one of the “Best Characters On Television.” The magazine’s Matt Taibbi writes, “Unlike every other sportscaster in the corporate-sponsored TV universe, Barkley doesn’t even pretend to care about most of the games, and sometimes he’ll even openly bash the product.” Barkley is “alone with MUHAMMAD ALI in having both the gift of speaking his mind and the sense of humor to match.” Barkley remains “one of the few true things on the air today” (ROLLING STONE, 9/29 issue).

LENDING A HELPING HAND: In Indianapolis, William Booher reports more than 2,000 Super Bowl XLVI volunteers yesterday “received the red-carpet treatment” in a kickoff event in Conseco Fieldhouse. 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee Dir of Communications DIANNA BOYCE said that the group “received 16,000 applications from people who wanted to be volunteers.” About “8,000 volunteers will be used” for the Feb. 5 event (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 9/22).

FIGHTING CHANCE: SI’s Austin Murphy writes “THE LAST GLADIATORS,” directed by ALEX GIBNEY, “gives us the deepest, most detailed look yet at the paradoxical subculture of NHL enforcers.” The movie debuted Sept. 9 at the Toronto Int’l Film Festival (SI, 9/26 issue).

NAMES: Sports Media Canada named Vancouver Sun columnist CAM COLE winner of the George Gross Award for Outstanding Sportswriting. Cole is the “first repeat winner, having also won the award in 2004.” The award will be presented on Oct. 3 in Toronto (VANCOUVERSUN.com, 9/22)....The NFL Panthers and Queens Univ. in Charlotte Tuesday kicked off a challenge for the school's students “to do 75,000 hours of community service in the 2011-12 school year.” Panthers Charities “intends to support the effort with programs on character education, reading and youth fitness.” The team will also “give a $2,500 volunteer grant to the effort” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 9/21)....UFC fighter ALISTAR OVEREEM “has severed ties with his longtime management team, Golden Glory,” but did not specify what led to the "breach of trust" (ESPN.com, 9/21)….The Bears team that won Super Bowl XX in '85 reportedly has been “invited to the White House on Oct. 7 for a ceremony to honor the team many consider the greatest of all time” (ESPNCHICAGO.com, 9/21)….ESPN’s ERIN ANDREWS appears in the October issue of Self Magazine, the publication’s Crossfit issue (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 9/21)….Patriots QB TOM BRADY modeled a team-branded bathrobe on Tuesday at teammate MATT LIGHT’s Celebrity Shootout in Mapleville, R.I., and it sold at auction for $2,600 (BOSTON HERALD, 9/21).
