Catch & Release: Alleged New Miami Marlins Logo Draws Criticism

A multicolored logo “purported to be the new insignia of the Miami Marlins was circulating on the Internet” last night, according to Craig Davis of the South Florida SUN-SENTINEL. Marlins President David Samson through a text message said, “The official unveiling is 11/11, and until then we will have no comment.” The supposed logo was “generating considerable discussion on Twitter and other Internet sites.” Davis wrote at “first glance, the abstract marlin looks like a stylized apostrophe to the M, which is way huge and strikes me as cartoonish raised eyebrows.” Davis: “Perhaps they’re floating this for a reading of opinion. Mine would be, throw this Marlins logo back and try again” (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 9/20). YAHOO SPORTS’ David Brown wrote the logo is “very art deco Miami.” The "Marlins" block letters script “isn't anything special.” Brown: “What about the abstract fish hooking its tail around the big ‘M?’ … It's so abstract, it would take a good guess to know that it's a marlin if we didn't have any context” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 9/21). CBSSPORTS.com’s Evan Brunell noted the new logo “ties into the color palette of the new stadium, as sections of seats will vary by color.” But he added, “I don't like it. It lacks imagination, as the ‘M’ is very plain, and there are a lot of colors at work. I can't imagine the new logo performing well in apparel sales” (CBSSPORTS.com, 9/20).

STUNNER SHADES: In Miami, Kelley Mitchell notes the retractable roof at the Marlins' under-construction stadium in Little Havana “closed for the first time in late spring, exposing the metal deck just in time to catch the strongest of the summer rays.” Marlins Exec VP/Ballpark Development Claude Delorme said, “We have had some comments.” Installation began last week on a white rubber membrane “that will ultimately cover all the metal,” and the membrane is “designed to reflect the sun and reduce the heat inside when the roof is closed.” The roof is expected to be completely covered “for the next 60 days” (MIAMI HERALD, 9/20).
