Serves & Volleys: New Haven Open Capitalizes On Recent Natural Occurances

In Connecticut, Fuller, Barker & Nowak reported one of the "hottest retail sale items" at the WTA New Haven Open Wednesday was a T-shirt that reads: "I survived the 2011 New Haven Open. Neither rain, nor hurricane nor earthquake can steal the show." The $19.99 shirt, the "result of the East Coast earthquake on Tuesday, is produced by Campus Customs, the official pro shop of the New Haven Open." Pro shop Manager John Knudson: "The shirts represented about 15 percent of our total sales on Tuesday and that is a huge number for one item." He noted that "so many shirts were made so quickly that he hasn’t had a chance to determine the exact number made for the two days" (NEW HAVEN REGISTER, 8/25).

RAISE YOUR GLASS: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Valentine Uhovski reported tennis player Rafael Nadal Wednesday "kicked off his sponsor appreciation week" ahead of the U.S. Open "by hosting a mocktail party" with Bacardi USA President Robert Furniss-Roe at Bar Basque in Manhattan. Nadal recently signed a deal becoming Bacardi's "Global Social Responsibility Ambassador" to promote alcohol moderation. He said, "I'm learning how to be a decent mocktail bartender thanks to these guys at Bacardi." Among the drinks served at the event was the "Rafa Berry Smash," which Nadal created "using a combination of cranberry and pomegranate juice, six fresh strawberries, four fresh raspberries and four fresh blueberries" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/25).

TALKING SHOP: Tennis player Maria Sharapova sat down with CNBC’s Darren Rovell to discuss the business of tennis. Rovell called Sharapova the “most marketable woman athlete in the world” and asked her, “You could have accepted any amount of money. Why are you playing with a Head racquet and how important is that in terms of accepting the money, but also being comfortable with your game?” Sharapova: “I picked up one of the new racquets that they were working on back in November ... and just had that feeling that I knew I’d be holding it for many more years to come” ("Fast Money," CNBC, 8/24).

OPEN FOR BUSINESS: SI's L. Jon Wertheim previews the U.S. Open and writes the tournament is "U.S. capitalism thrown into sharp relief." The "rampant commercialism (even the umbrellas shielding players from the sun bear logos) expresses either astute enterprise or uncontrolled greed." Wertheim: "The Open reeks of money. Walking through the parking lot, you can be forgiven for thinking you've stumbled on the world's largest Range Rover dealership." The U.S. Open has become the "highest-grossing annual attended sporting event in the world." Gross revenue for the event "will approach $250 million," making it one of the "world's most profitable sports properties" (SI, 8/29 issue).
