Sportsnet Magazine Will Be Its Own Entity, Adding Print To Rogers' Sports Properties

New Sportsnet Magazine To
Be Released Next Month
Sportsnet magazine Publisher & Editor-in-Chief Steve Maich said that Rogers Communications sees its new publishing venture as "completing the pie, adding print to the rest of their sports properties, which they hope will be a tantalizing prospect to owners," according to Raju Mudhar of the TORONTO STAR. The magazine launches next month, and Maich has made it "very clear that the magazine will be its own entity" and not just a "marketing extension of the other Rogers Sportsnet properties." Maich said, "We're very focused and think we have a great opportunity to do something unlike anything that anyone has seen in this market. We're really inspired by a lot of the European sports magazines, which are incredibly visual and beautiful to look at, but are also written and edited with this passion that really kind of matches the passion of sports fans." Mudhar wonders, "Who do they plan to copy? Is this going to be a Canadian 'Sports Illustrated?' Or as an arm of a broadcast network, is it going to be more like ESPN?" Maich said, "It depends on if you're talking from a business model or a content model perspective. From the business side, yes, I think we have a lot in common with ESPN, because of how each distinct platform -- TV, radio, online and print -- can feed and help one another." Maich stressed that "nothing with the magazine will happen in isolation, indicating there will be a back and forth between their distinct web home on Sportsnet.ca and that site's existing digital staff, and that the magazine will also have an iPad app." Mudhar noted the magazine's staff has "a few big gets," but much of the staff "is made up of lesser known, younger writers, coming from various publications" (TORONTO STAR, 8/8).
