DAILY VARIETY’s Stuart Levine reported the NHL is partnering with Disney "to help bring younger fans closer to the game.” Merchandise based on Disney Channel's "Phineas and Ferb" show will make its way "into NHL rinks around North America next season, with video from the series also being on display during the games.” NHL VP/Consumer Products Jim Haskins said, "The 'Phineas and Ferb' brand evokes creativity, youthfulness and high energy, not unlike the NHL brand" (VARIETY.com, 7/19).

WRAPPING IT UP: AROUND THE RINGS’ Mark Bisson noted LOCOG officials said they are “making ‘good progress’ in their discussions to land a sponsor to fund the multimillion dollar fabric wrap for the 80,000-seat Olympic stadium.” A LOCOG spokesperson said that officials “are ‘still progressing the wrap discussions’ and said he is ‘very’ confident a deal will be signed with a sponsor.” But he added that an announcement “will not be made before July 27 -- the year-to-go mark before the Olympics open” (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 7/19).

RAINBOW BRIGHT: In Honolulu, Stephen Tsai noted Univ. of Hawaii officials have “turned to Facebook to trumpet” UH QB Bryant Moniz as a Heisman Trophy candidate. The school in ’07 “spent about $25,000 to produce and distribute DVDs promoting” QB Colt Brennan, who finished third in the Heisman voting. But UH athletics Media Relations Dir Derek Inouchi said that with "limited funds” the university “turned to the most popular social network.” Inouchi said that the “obstacle is getting viewers to ‘like’ the page." Once that happens, he said "you can push content to your followers." The Facebook page “is intended as a fan-friendly vehicle for Warriors supporters.” The page includes photos and videos of Moniz (HONOLULU STAR-ADVERTISER, 7/19).

INSURING THE BATTLE: State Farm Insurance has signed a three-year deal to become the title sponsor of the State Farm Battle in Seattle. The event is a made-for-TV college basketball game featuring Gonzaga Univ. at KeyArena. Gonzaga this year is playing the Univ. of Arizona in the ninth edition of the event (State Farm Insurance).
