Lucas Oil To Renegotiate Naming Rights For Raceway After Track Loses Races

Lucas Oil Founder Forrest Lucas on Thursday said that he “expects to renegotiate his naming rights deal with Lucas Oil Raceway,” following Wednesday's announcement that NASCAR's Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series will not return to the track in '12, according to Ben Jones of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. The Nationwide race is moving to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Lucas said that a clause in the company's contract with the raceway “allows Lucas Oil to renegotiate its sponsorship arrangement should NASCAR pull out.” Lucas “would not reveal details of the deal with the track, but it's a fraction” of the $121.5M, 20-year contract for Lucas Oil Stadium. LOR is owned by the NHRA. Lucas said that he “does not expect Lucas Oil to remove its sponsorship entirely from the track, which hosts the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals annually on Labor Day weekend.” But the loss of NASCAR “changes the relationship between Lucas Oil and the raceway” (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 7/8).

TRACKING CHANGES: In K.C., Randy Covitz reports Kansas Speedway “will undergo a massive renovation project next year that will include repaving, reconfiguring and rebanking the 1.5 mile trioval, and adding a new infield road course for Grand-Am Road Racing.” The alterations “will begin immediately after” the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series STP 400 next spring and “will be completed in time for the Sprint Cup Hollywood Casino 400 in October.” The '12 NASCAR schedule has not been set, but Kansas Speedway President Pat Warren on Thursday said that the STP 400 “will run in early spring to provide as much time necessary to get the repaving project finished.” This year’s spring race weekend was June 4-5, but the '12 date “probably will be either April 28-29 or May 5-6.” Warren said that the “reconfiguration of the track, including variable banking, will create better side-by-side racing” (K.C. STAR, 7/8).
