Welcome To Austin: Longhorn Network To Feature Two UT Football Games This Fall

Longhorn Network will carry two Univ. of Texas football games this season, thanks to a programming agreement that ESPN and Fox have signed. The channel will kick off its live game schedule with a Rice-Texas game Sept. 3 at 6:00pm CT. The Rice game will re-air on LHN later that night at 11:00pm. LHN also picked up the rights to a second to-be-determined game later in the season. ESPN says the second game will be against a Big 12 foe. Fox, which holds the Big 12's cable rights, granted LHN a limited waiver to allow ESPN to shift the games from ABC to Longhorn Network this season. A source said Fox agreed to the change when ESPN offered certain selection considerations for college football games, including the possibility of relaxing its broadcast exclusivity and allowing Fox to televise Big 12 football games on its broadcast channel starting in '12 (John Ourand, THE DAILY).

POTENTIAL TO BE A GAME CHANGER: In Dallas, Chuck Carlton reported the “biggest significance” of Longhorn Network's Aug. 26 launch will be “the impact of an unprecedented cable network devoted to just one college and its powerhouse athletic program.” The ESPN-backed net “could be an omnipresent 24/7 juggernaut on extended cable, broadcasting all things burnt orange across the state, the Big 12 footprint and the nation.” However, Longhorn Network will air just the two football games "and a handful of men’s basketball games.” Carlton noted no one “knows the implications for the competitive balance in the Big 12 and future media rights deals.” UT Men's AD DeLoss Dodds: “I think it’s huge and I think it’s going to be in time bigger for our university that it is for athletics. It’s going to be a great branding tool for the university. I don’t think we can fathom what it can be.” Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin: “My hat’s off to UT-Austin. I think this is an extraordinary thing.” But A&M AD Bill Byrne suggested that ESPN "paid at least six to seven times more than anticipated network revenue.” Byrne: “Ask the folks from Bristol how they’re going to make a profit on this.” Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe indicated that Longhorn Network’s impact “could be muted.” Beebe: “I think certainly the other institutions have concerns. On the other hand, how much more can you do? You’re already paying the coaches at the highest level. You’re already funding facilities at the highest level. I don’t know if it translates into victories” (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 7/5).

MASS APPEAL? In Oklahoma City, Berry Tramel wrote under the header, “Longhorn Network: Many Will Buy, Few Will Watch.” Tramel wrote the network will “help Texas recruiting, in sports other than football,” and it “pads Texas’ pocketbook, but since when did the Longhorns hurt for money?” Tramel: “I really haven’t seen what the big deal is, about the excitement on Texas’ side or the resentment on its opponents’ side. The shows that have been announced for the Longhorn Network aren’t exactly must-see TV” (NEWSOK.com, 7/3).
