Tiger Tops SI's "Fortunate 50" List Again, But Gap Is Narrowing

TIGER WOODS for the eighth straight year tops SI’s “Fortunate 50” list, earning more than $62M combined in earnings and endorsements, according to Jonah Freedman of SI.com. While Woods still tops the annual list, his “quickly shrinking earnings have never been lower," nor has he “ever been this close to surrendering his once insurmountable lead.” Woods beat out fellow golfer PHIL MICKELSON for the top spot by $1,108,183. In addition, “big question marks loom over the other big names on the 50, as labor strife in the NFL and NBA threaten the future paychecks of their players.” The average earnings of athletes on this year’s 50 is $24.3M, down 7% from ’10. This year's list features 19 NBA players, 17 MLB players, eight NFL players, three NASCAR drivers and three golfers. Outside the U.S., ROGER FEDERER “retained his perch at No. 1” on SI’s "International 20" list, “followed closely by international boxing sensation and now Filipino politician MANNY PACQUIAO” (SI.com, 6/16).
