Names In The News

Seahawks and Trail Blazers Owner PAUL ALLEN yesterday was profiled on CBS' "60 Minutes," where he promoted his new memoir, "IDEA MAN." CBS' Lesley Stahl noted it is "one of the only in-depth interviews he's ever given." With his new book, the former Microsoft co-founder is "being branded a bitter billionaire." In the book, which hits stores this week, Allen "gives an account of those ideas" that started Microsoft and also "draws a dark portrait of his fellow co-founder and lifelong friend," BILL GATES. Allen said, "I just felt like it's an important piece of technology history, and I should tell it like it happened. And I hope people understand and respect that." Stahl notes after Microsoft went public, Allen "became one of the richest men on earth, at one point worth an estimated $40 billion." He has "spent his wealth on a hodgepodge of many interests." Stahl noted Allen has never been married, and he is "often described as a recluse." Allen said, "I've got such a diverse set of interests: Movies, aviation, technology, sports teams" ("60 Minutes," CBS, 4/17).

Frazier "spends hours inside [his closet] thinking about what to wear" for Knicks broadcasts, and he "will work and rework his suits and accessories to gratify himself and stun others, something he has done since soon after he became a Knick in the 1960s." Frazier "occasionally spends hours studying swatches for future suits and shirts on a scholarly hunt for what he calls jazzy, and what others might call gaudy." Frazier "plans his next season's outfits during the current one" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/16).
