Rio 2016 Local Sponsorships Surpass $700M With Two Deals

Organizers of the '16 Rio Games said that they have surpassed $700M for local sponsorships "with just two deals," according to Tariq Panja of BLOOMBERG NEWS. The deals are with Banco Bradesco in the banking category and with Embratel Participacoes and America Movil SAB's Claro, both owned by Carlos Slim, for telecommunications. ROCOG CEO Leonardo Gryner said that both deals are for more than $320M and "set records for local Olympic sponsorships." Rio 2016 is now aiming to cap sponsorships at $1.2B, which "means it won't require government funds" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 4/6).

GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING: BMW Head of Sales & Marketing Ian Robertson said that the carmaker “may become a global sponsor” of the IOC. Robertson: “The values of the Olympic movement fit very nicely with ours, and it’s something which has a true global position.” Robertson’s comments came Thursday during the SportAccord conference in London, where he helped “present the Munich bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics” (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 4/7).
