Peter Jacobsen Sports has signed golfer Matt Kuchar to the agency’s first full-service player representation deal, not including Jacobsen’s own career management. At the same time, Jacobsen said that VP/Player Relations Mike O’Connell has been promoted to COO and will run the day-to-day operations. O’Connell, a Notre Dame graduate and former golfer for the Fighting Irish, joined PJS in '99 as a tournament coordinator for the Fred Meyer Challenge before moving into player relations. PJS previously has been known for running such tournaments as the CVS Caremark Charity Classic, creating custom golf outings and consulting with golf clients such as Lexus. O’Connell led the player relations efforts in the past, which involved securing golfers for its tournaments and working with players to help them negotiate contracts. O’Connell also has been in charge of managing Jacobsen’s own playing career, but Kuchar’s signing marks the first comprehensive player relationship, from contracts to marketing, outside of the agency’s founder and CEO. “This is an area that we’ve been very selective about,” Jacobsen said. “We’re not interested in making players’ reservations and picking up their laundry. We’re interested in working with players who are committed to golf and who we can help with the business of golf.” In terms of future player rep deals, Jacobsen said, “We’ll look at the opportunities as they come, but it’s not really our core business.” Kuchar, who formerly was represented by Atlanta-based Career Sports & Entertainment, is coming off his best professional season, winning nearly $5M to lead the PGA Tour’s official money list.
