UNC, Michigan State Finalizing Details For Aircraft Carrier Hoops Game

North Carolina, Michigan State planning game for Nov. 11, 2011 in San Diego
Univ. of North Carolina Senior Associate AD Larry Gallo yesterday said although a contract has not been signed, "all indications are that all systems are go" for UNC and Michigan State to play a men's basketball game on an aircraft carrier next Veteran’s Day, according to Robbi Pickeral of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. The game, which "has been discussed for years, is slated to be held on Nov. 11, 2011 in San Diego, although it’s still not clear on which aircraft carrier the game would be played." Gallo said, "We have not received a contract yet, and there are a lot of parties involved. We’ve got ourselves and Michigan State, the U.S. government and a promoter-type person. So we’re still sitting tight" (NEWSOBSERVER.com, 1/25). UNC coach Roy Williams on his radio show Monday said, "It hasn’t been announced yet, but we’re supposed to be playing Michigan State in San Diego on an aircraft carrier on Veterans Day next year." Lt. Aaron Kakiel, a spokesperson for aircraft carrier operations at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, said, "We’re aware of their desire, but nothing has been confirmed. We’re waiting on a formal proposal." Asked which carrier would be the most likely host of the game, he said, "We’re waiting on their formal proposal to see what’s available" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/26).
