What I like in an insight: "Aging gracefully is the key to life. When life becomes graceful you have so much more to offer, to put in the kitty, to bring out humor, to bring contentment. This age stuff is all in your mind. The Chinese have a saying, that age is experience, not age" -- AL MCGUIRE.
An influential person in my career: WAYNE EMBRY, Bucks general manager, 1972-79.
An out-of-the-box idea: Frozen custard.
A timeless idea: The #2 pencil ... where great ideas and concepts often have begun for years.
A sports facility: New Meadowlands Stadium, a collaboration to share time and space by the Giants and Jets.
A sports event: 7th Game, NBA Finals.
A strategy: Surround yourself with bright people who work hard, love the fight and will never quit. It helps if they like to have fun, too.
A brand: adidas.
A trend: Dynamic pricing.
A pro league or team business initiative: NBA Cares -- in just five years the league and teams have donated more than $145M to charity, completed more than 1.4 million hours of community services and created 525 places where kids and families live, learn or play.
A story that bears watching: Merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation.
An idea or invention I wish I had thought of: Tollway speed pass.
A fantasy job: Late night radio talk show host -- anything but sports talk.
What I like about my job: Working with young people, watching/helping them build their careers with hard work and smiles on their faces.
Sports: Has relevancy to every demographic worldwide somehow, somewhere, all the time.
Sports business: Being part of a team competing to win off the court.
Sports media: Live, one-on-one intelligent conversation with genuine journalists.
Sports technology: The instant availability of information, opinion, visuals online and via mobile channels.
Competing: There is always an outcome and you can always do better.
The future (or direction) of sports business: The interest, demand for and quality of sports content continues to grow and technology continues to enhance the experience at home, in-arena, at work, play and wherever else fans go.
Sports fans: The innocent excitement and pure joy of young fans meeting their heroes.
What I would like to change in what I do: Have more time to enjoy the successes, and more easily forget the disappointments.
See more of in sports: More athletes furthering elementary education and reading initiatives.
See more of in sports business: Creative sponsorships that combine integrated marketing and cause-related funding for education and childrens' cancer research.
See less of in sports: The 1% of bad judgment, bad behavior off the field/court/arena.
See less of in sports business: Labor unrest.
Steinmiller Would Like To See
See different: College basketball players stay in school for four seasons.
Eliminate: Unprepared interviewers on live telecasts; athletes and coaches offering clichéd answers.
What I don't like in a pet peeve: Public displays of poor manners and bad language and the lack of common courtesy.
In sports: Sloppy reporting, incorrect facts, personal vendettas.
In business: Poor customer service.
About sports fans: I love them all.
What I like in heroes: Doctors, elementary school teachers, committed clergymen and women.
Players: KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR, OSCAR ROBERTSON, ANDREW BOGUT, BRANDON JENNINGS, LOU GEHRIG.
Teams: The Bucks, of course. Milwaukee Brewers (my son is media relations manager), Chicago Cubs, Marquette Golden Eagles.
City: Milwaukee, Wisc. -- the most accessible pro sports family town in America.
Possession: ERNIE BANKS autographed jersey and ball.
Memento: A black-and-white, game-action photo of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, JERRY WEST and WILT CHAMBERLAIN in a four-foot square of court in the Forum, 1973 playoffs.
Time of year (because): July -- the best weather, best holiday (the 4th) and best time to recharge.
Music: BRIAN WILSON Reimagines GERSHWIN; Motown Sounds; The Beatles.
