Quote of the Day
"There's little doubt amongst anyone in the professional sports community, here or even abroad, that this was one of, if not the, most successful launch of a professional sports expansion team in history."
-- MLS Commissioner Don Garber, on the Sounders FC (SEATTLE TIMES, 10/24).
Out With The Old, In With The New
The Fall Classic is set, and while the Rangers-Giants matchup may leave the folks at both MLB and Fox a tad underwhelmed, it is clear the demand for the first World Series winner ever in either Dallas-Ft. Worth or San Francisco is high. The shops at both Rangers Ballpark and AT&T Park were flooded with fans looking for World Series merchandise the morning after each team clinched its respective pennant, and StubHub is saying the series is on pace to be the hottest-selling Fall Classic ever for the site. That rabid fan support is desired by Fox, which misses out on a ratings bonanza with a Yankees-Phillies rematch. While the presence of two of the top six media markets should help ratings, neither club historically has had much broad appeal outside its local fan base. Ratings for the playoffs to date have been solid, with the LCS round drawing the largest numbers since ’07, but can Josh Hamilton and Buster Posey maintain that momentum?
