AFL Extends Contract For
Commissioner Jerry Kurz

The Arena Football League has approved a one-year contract extension for Commissioner Jerry Kurz. Kurz was part of the original AFL ownership group when it was created in '87, and was named commissioner during its '10 relaunch after the old AFL was shuttered in '09 and bought out of bankruptcy. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed (John Lombardo, SportsBusiness Journal)....The Lightning named Magic Exec VP/Sales & Marketing STEVE GRIGGS COO for the team and the St. Pete Times Forum (Lightning)….Comcast-Spectacor named RUSS CHANDLER Exec VP & CFO. Chandler spent the past 18 years at Comcast Cable, most recently as Senior VP/Programming (Comcast-Spectacor)….Speed Skating Canada named JOHN-PAUL CODY-COX CEO, replacing JEAN DUPRE, who left after 15 years to become CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee (GLOBE & MAIL, 8/31)….The Thunder promoted TROY WEAVER to VP/Assistant GM, ROB HENNIGAN to Assistant GM/Player Personnel, PAUL RIVERS to Dir of Minor League Operations & Basketball Technology and BRANDON BARNETT to Dir of Minor League Scouting and Manager of Minor League Operations. The team also named MICHAEL WINGER Assistant GM/Legal & Administration and DAVID VANTERPOOL Pro Scout (Thunder).

EXECS: N.C. State Univ. named CHRIS KINGSTON Senior Associate AD. He will oversee external initiatives, outdoor and indoor facilities, game operations, athletic branding, multimedia rights and NCAA recertification (NCSU)….The Big South Conference promoted Coordinator of New Media MARK BRYANT to Dir of Multimedia Development and Office Manager NANCY PERKINS to Dir of Administration & Finance (Big South)….The Univ. of Delaware named AUGIE MAURELLI Assistant AD for Strength & Conditioning (Univ. of Delaware)….RON OLIN was named Dir of Security/Internal Controls for the athletic department at the Univ. of Kansas. Olin retired as Chief of Police for Lawrence, Kan., yesterday (KU).
