BYU Football To Become Independent In '11-12
In the latest shakeup of the college sports landscape, BYU is departing the MWC to become an independent in football and join the WCC in all other sports. The move comes after school voices its displeasure with MWC’s television exposure and the university's limited access to events for its BYUtv channel. School officials now are engaged in discussions with ESPN to televise multiple home football games, and BYU is betting a new television deal with the Worldwide Leader will earn it more than the roughly $1.3M annual payout it received from the MWC. But at least one source says the school “greatly overestimated” what ESPN will pay, and BYU could find itself being relegated to playing football games on Wednesday or Thursday nights. Regardless, BYU's departure is a blow to the MWC, which loses the Salt Lake City market and its 944,000 TV HHs. The conference reportedly now will turn its efforts to exploring a partnership with Conference USA.
