The MLBPA announced yesterday that it has hired former NHLPA General Counsel IAN PENNY as a senior labor attorney as the union gets ready to negotiate a new CBA. “I’ve known Ian for more than 15 years, and have worked closely with him when he was with the National Labor Relations Board and the National Hockey League Players Association," MLBPA Exec Dir MICHAEL WEINER said in a statement. "The players are fortunate that we’re able to add someone of such high caliber to the staff as we prepare for the next round of collective bargaining.” Penny joins the MLBPA after spending the previous 10 years with the NHLPA, where he most recently served as Interim Exec Dir. Penny and many members of the NHLPA staff and its outside advisory board of leading Canadian labor experts stepped down in a mass resignation last October. Prior to his resignation, Penny wrote a letter to the NHLPA Exec Board expressing deep concerns that the rights of union members and employees were being trampled by an investigation into the firing of former NHLPA Exec Dir PAUL KELLY, conducted by veteran NHLPA members.
