  • Pirates Earned Net Income Of $5.4M In '09

    The Pirates over the weekend clinched their 18th consecutive losing season, and team management is hoping loosening up its wallet may help reverse its current path. Pirates President Frank Coonelly says the team will have a “meaningful” payroll increase next season. The club’s $39M major league payroll is the lowest in MLB, but Coonelly notes the team will be “aggressive in pursuing” players in the offseason. Meanwhile, Pirates Owner Bob Nutting gives “unprecedented detail” about the team’s financial state. The team pulled in a net income last year of around $5.4M, down from $14.4M in ’08. Nutting: “The presumed implication that anyone in the ownership group is lining their pockets is inappropriate.”
