World Golf Tour, LPGA Sign Deal For Online Virtual Golf Game

World Golf Tour To Create Golf Tour This
Fall As Part Of Partnership With LPGA

World Golf Tour, a S.F.-based developer of online golf simulation games, has struck a partnership with the LPGA to create a virtual golf tour that will be conducted this fall. The free tournament will use lifelike digital re-creations of Pinehurst No. 8, the Kiawah Ocean Course and Wolf Creek, with winners playing in a championship tournament in December. The pact expands upon prior WGT deals with the USGA for the U.S. Open and the R&A for the British Open, events that each drew in excess of 250,000 participants. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the pact is based on a revenue-sharing agreement around advertising sold for the effort. "This is the next step in our progression," said WGT CEO YuChiang Cheng. "By having this as a longer event, we should be able to build engagement and interest that much more. It's sort of a pilot program, as the LPGA is really exploring everything around how best to use the digital platforms. But we're delighted to be a part of it, and it's a natural extension of what they're doing." The virtual tournament will be co-promoted by both sides online and offline, and the game will be accessible through both WGT.com and LPGA.com. Winners will earn actual prizes including tickets to LPGA tournaments, and opportunities to play in LPGA Pro-Am events.
