    The PGA Tour’s stop in Charlotte will have a new name when Rory McIlroy defends his title next year, as the Quail Hollow Championship will be renamed the Wells Fargo Championship. The bank wanted to distance itself from the tournament amid the depths of the economic downturn when it acquired former title sponsor Wachovia in ’08. However, Wells Fargo is now converting former Wachovia branches to the S.F.-based bank’s name, and officials deem the exposure from an event that perennially gets one of the best fields in golf worthwhile. Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank is in the final year of its deal to title sponsor the second stop of the PGA Tour Playoffs, and bank officials are hopeful they can exercise a two-year option through ’12. However, there is no guarantee the FedExCup will make a trek through Boston after this September. This news comes as USA TODAY reports local golf courses are still hurting from the recession and the industry “faces an economic outlook that is sinking like a downhill putt.”
