  • Passing Of A Legend

    Ernie Harwell Fondly
    Remembered Today

The broadcast world lost a legend last night, when longtime Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell passed away at the age of 92. The voice of the Tigers for 42 years, Harwell is as associated with the team as Al Kaline and Kirk Gibson. His “easygoing manner and love of baseball” made him a favorite among baseball fans across the country. Harwell was a “true gentleman,” who was "known for his humbleness." Through his conversational style he provided fans with informative and entertaining anecdotes. But, most importantly, he let the game speak for itself. Harwell, a member of both the National Sportscasters & Sportswriters HOF and the Baseball HOF, never let himself become bigger than the game, and he “never had an act” on air. A public viewing will be held tomorrow at Comerica Park, while the Tigers will wear a patch on their uniforms honoring their longtime broadcaster for the remainder of the season.
