LPGA Championship Could Travel Globe If DuPont Comes Onboard
Published April 23, 2010
The LPGA Championship "likely would rotate around the world" if DuPont comes on board as the event's primary sponsor, according to Beth Ann Baldry of GOLFWEEK. DuPont for months "has been considered the front-runner for sponsoring the tour's flagship event in 2011." A source said that when the tourney is held in the U.S., it "would be hosted at DuPont Country Club" in Wilmington, Delaware, where it was held from '94-'04. The event would "start on U.S. soil for two years and then possibly move to China and Brazil." Several other regions "also are being considered." Rotating the tournament "would help alleviate some of the pressure the LPGA faces to have a major in Asia." DuPont is "one of several sponsorship possibilities for the event," but the source said that it is "the only company interested in a global rotation." Baldry notes a decision "could come as early as mid-May." Wegmans has a one-year deal to sponsor the '10 tournament in June (GOLFWEEK, 4/23 issue). Golfer Christina Kim said the LPGA Championship "should be played all around the country." Kim: "Why not? I know that there are a lot of places that we don't hit on our map" ("19th Hole," Golf Channel, 4/21).
