OLYMPIC FALLOUT: Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium set a record in online viewership for a Canadian broadcaster during the Vancouver Olympics with 28.5 million videos viewed and 12.3 million unique visitors. On average, online viewers watched 54 minutes of video each day of the Olympics. The most-viewed mobile stream was the Canada-U.S. Gold Medal men's hockey game on February 28, which delivered 34,743 streams (CTV)….In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich wrote that the "shine from the Vancouver Olympics is having different effects on different sports." Last Saturday's "Hockey Night In Canada" regional split of the first game drew more than 2 million viewers, showing that "hockey obviously hasn't suffered in Canada." Curling has also performed well after the Olympics, as last Sunday's finals of the Tim Horton's Brier, which is the Canadian men's national curling championship, "scored a record audience" with 1.6 million viewers. Zelkovich noted that skiing has not gotten a post-Olympics bounce, as none of last Saturday afternoon's three FIS World Cup events on the CBC "could draw more than 72,000 viewers" (THESTAR.com, 3/16).
HOT HOOPS: The Big Ten Network's (BTN) broadcast last Friday of Minnesota's OT win over Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten men's basketball tournament earned a 2.2 cable rating in the net's eight metered-market footprint, marking the net's highest-rated basketball game ever. The previous record was a 1.9 rating for Purdue-Ohio State on February 17 (BTN)….Mavericks-T'Wolves on FS Southwest on March 8 earned a 4.1 local rating (105,000 HHs), marking the net's highest-rated Mavericks broadcast in almost three years. Nets-Mavericks on March 10 also drew a similar audience, earning a 4.0 rating (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 3/13).
