| Goren Says Fox Will Be Talking To IOC About Bidding For '14, '16 Olympics Rights |
Fox Sports President Ed Goren indicated that the net "is going to make a push" to acquire the rights to the ’14 Sochi and ’16 Rio de Janeiro Games, according to Michele Steele of Bloomberg TV. Goren said, "We will be talking to the IOC. If I believe published reports, NBC lost a lot of money on the Vancouver Games -- what will be the price? They did a great job. They did everything they could.” Goren said NBC’s team in Vancouver, headed by NBC Sports & Olympics Chair Dick Ebersol, “did a great job” with the Games. Goren: “They did everything they could. … The broadcasts were great, the ratings were wonderful, but the economics become a problem.” Steele notes Fox is "not going to be paying $2B that NBC laid out for Vancouver and for London.” Goren: “What is the appropriate price? It doesn't seem to be the same price that NBC paid" (Bloomberg TV, 3/18). Goren said Ebersol “didn't hurt the Olympics, he helped the Olympics. He just paid too much.” Meanwhile, NBC was criticized by some in the media for its tape-delayed coverage from Vancouver, but Goren said that was nothing more than something writers decided to write about. Goren: “Writers shouldn't get paid to write the same damn story again” (THE DAILY).
