HIGHER LEARNING: ESPN averaged 1.359 million viewers for its 131 men's regular-season college basketball telecasts this season, marking the net's most-viewed season ever. The audience figure was up 8% from 1.258 million viewers last season. The North Carolina-Texas game on December 19 at Cowboys Stadium was the highest-rated and most-viewed game of the season on ESPN, averaging a 2.4 U.S. rating and 2.949 million viewers. ESPN2's 173 regular-season games averaged 482,000 viewers, flat with last year (ESPN).
OLYMPIC CARRYOVER? Comcast SportsNet Chicago earned a 4.4 local rating and 152,000 HHs for its telecast of the March 5 Canucks-Blackhawks game, its highest rating ever for a Blackhawks regular-season game. The game peaked at a 5.2 rating from 8:45-9:00pm CT. CSN Chicago was the highest-rated net in the Chicago market for the night in the adults 18-49 and 25-54 demos (CSN Chicago)....In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich noted TSN's curling coverage last weekend earned five of the top eight sports audiences in Canada. Zelkovich wrote it is "amazing" that curling "drew an average audience of 846,000 on Sunday night -- up against the Oscars." Zelkovich: "Curling is building on its success from Vancouver" (THESTAR.com, 3/9).
TEE TIME: The PGA Tour is averaging a 1.4 rating through 10 weekend telecasts on broadcast TV (CBS and NBC). The rating is down 18% from a 1.7 rating at the same point last season, when 11 telecasts had aired, including the former FBR Open, which moved to Golf Channel this year due to the Winter Olympics on NBC. Tiger Woods also had not made a weekend TV appearance at the same point last season after losing in the second round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships (THE DAILY).
GIRLS & BOYS: On top of increases for its primetime Vancouver Games telecasts, NBC also saw gains in key demographics in comparison to its telecasts during the '06 Turin Games. Males 18-34 and 25-54 saw the biggest increases, as each demo was up double digits from Turin. Female viewership was also up in the 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 demos. Additionally, data from Nielsen Media through Day Nine of the Vancouver Games showed that females also accounted for 56% of Olympic viewing audience. By comparison, females accounted for 46% of the Super Bowl XLIV audience (Austin Karp, THE DAILY).
