Packers Adding Alternate Third Uniform Beginning In '10 Season
Published March 10, 2010
Packers President & CEO Mark Murphy yesterday said that the team "will have a third uniform to use occasionally over the next few seasons," according to Pete Dougherty of the GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE. The Packers have "reached deep into their past to add an alternate color scheme to their traditional green-and-gold uniforms," as the "new look will be an old one, similar to the uniform they wore in their first decade in the NFL." Murphy said of the decision to add a third jersey, "To give our fans something they can embrace and to really personify and celebrate the history." The Packers will have "only a home version of the new uniform," and Murphy said that they "probably will use it only once this season against a yet-to-be-determined opponent." Murphy "would not describe the uniform except to say it's from the team's first decade." The team will unveil the jersey Friday, with "several players modeling it during Fan Fest's kickoff" at the Lambeau Field Atrium. A report last month indicated that the new uniform "will be similar to what the Packers wore in 1929 with slight modifications to conform with current NFL guidelines." Murphy "did not dispute" the report. That uniform reportedly "consists of a plain navy blue jersey with a gold circle in the middle that contains a blue number, though the circle and number will be enlarged from the 1929 uniform to satisfy NFL guidelines." The pants and helmet from that season, "as portrayed in a picture in the Packers' press guide, are khaki." Murphy said that the new alternate uniforms and gameday apparel "will be available to the public probably during training camp" (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 3/10). NATIONAL FOOTBALL POST's Michael Lombardi writes, "I’m a traditional list when it comes to uniforms, and I believe even the slightest variation of that tradition is not right. I’ll wait to see the outcome, but I don’t like the sound of this at all" (NATIONALFOOTBALLPOST.com, 3/10).
