Sony Ericsson To Be
WTA Tour's Top Sponsor
Two weeks after Corona’s deal with the ATP comes another sign of a thaw in the sponsorship market, as Sony Ericsson signs a new deal with the WTA Tour through ’12. The phone company will continue to have a large presence with the tour, but it will be in a much different capacity than in recent memory. The new agreement will see Sony Ericsson go from the tour’s title sponsor to its top global sponsor, meaning the company's name will be dropped from the tour’s name at some point during the ’10 season. The new deal is worth an average of $9M a year, down from the $14.7M the tour received annually from the old deal. However, tour execs likely will classify it as a positive development -- many believed the struggling company would drop its ties to the WTA all together.
