Quote of the Day

"We are building the WNBA; it has not been a profitable venture, as you know. But I just think that one of the responsibilities that I have in Minnesota is to provide leadership, and one of the things we can do in women's sports is to stick with it"

-- WNBA Lynx Owner Glen Taylor (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 3/5).

The NFL entered the great unknown on Friday morning, as the league began its first season without a salary cap since ’93. There are mixed opinions on what an uncapped year will mean for the league. Will deep-pocketed owners such as Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder go on spending sprees? Will low-revenue teams take advantage of the elimination of a minimum payroll and spend less? One league exec says it will be a combination: “Some teams are going to go crazy and some teams are not.” But many team execs, at least for now, are preaching caution, noting they are operating as they would under a salary cap. Eagles GM Howie Roseman says, "I think it's going to be business as usual." But the uncertainty of the league's future labor situation "has everyone clutching their wallets," and a weak free agency market could result in a drop in offseason activity. If that happens, the league can expect NFLPA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith to be watching closely, looking for any signs of collusion.
