Yankees Must Return Portion Of World Series Share Due To Error
Published March 3, 2010
Yankees players "recently received a letter from the [MLBPA] that informed them that there was a mistake in the calculation of the World Series championship share," according to sources cited by Darren Rovell of CNBC.com. The Yankees originally "awarded 46 players and coaches full shares, making the full share a record $365,052," but the letter indicated that "three people (two trainers and a player) were not allocated their proper share." As a result, those who received full shares are "now being asked to pay back approximately $10,000 each" (CNBC.com, 3/2). The AP's Ronald Blum noted MLB Commissioner Bud Selig's office revised the full share to $350,030, which is "below the $351,504 a full share was worth" for the Phillies in '08 (AP, 3/2).
YANKEE FOR LIFE? In N.Y., Kevin Kernan writes the Yankees "need to find a way to make Derek Jeter a Yankee for Life." Jeter yesterday said being an owner is "definitely a goal" of his. The team needs to "work out a deal with Jeter where they allow him to become part of Yankees ownership after his playing days are complete." But players "cannot be part of ownership, so this would have to be a separate deal." Jeter is "set on being an owner when his playing days are done," and "as it stands now, most certainly, Jeter will follow the player-to-ownership path of Michael Jordan." Kernan: "Imagine the buzz of having Jeter as part of the ownership group" (N.Y. POST, 3/3).
