Colbert Talks Figure Skating, As Only He Can, On NBC Late Night

Colbert Closes Out NBC's Olympic Coverage On Friday Night Atop Stuffed Moose

Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert appeared in studio with NBC's Bob Costas during Friday's late-night telecast wearing what Costas called "a modern-day Dudley Do-Right" outfit. Colbert: "I have just fallen in love with this country. You just got to love any nation that is secure enough in its manhood that this is the most manly outfit you can wear." Costas said, "It seems like no matter what you say, the Canadians are un-insultable at this point. They love you no matter what." Colbert: "They are tough people, Bob. I love them because they seem to like me, and I am an affection whore." Later, Colbert discussed men's figure skating, saying, "I am so excited that (Evan) Lysacek won last night. It's morning in America. We went through a rollercoaster of emotions last night. Lysacek nailed it obviously. … He doesn't throw a quad, Bob, but it's triples galore. He is giving away triples like candy." Colbert said he thought U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir should have earned the Silver Medal. Costas asked, "Knocking Plushenko down to Bronze? Further infuriating Vladimir Putin?"

MOOSE CROSSING: Later in the broadcast, Costas pointed out the moose sitting beside Colbert, which had "migrated" from "The Colbert Report" set to the NBC Olympic studio. Colbert said, "This is my moose from my set, which I named Ebersol, after the director of sports here." Costas: "The Chairman of NBC Sports." Colbert: "And I believe you renamed this moose." Costas replied, "Yes, now that we have custody of the moose, the moose’s name going forward is Colbert." Colbert: "It was a great choice to bring the moose in here because in this economic climate, you know the great thing about investing in dead animals? They only get deader. You know your money is safe." Costas: "There is equity there." Colbert then asked Costas about riding the moose, saying, "Have you gotten the moose stank out of your pants yet?" Costas: "It took a while, but since I rode the moose on your show, I think you have to reciprocate." Colbert said, "Let's do it," and ended the segment atop the moose. Colbert: "You’re just going to leave me up here, aren't you?" ("XXI Winter Olympics," NBC, 2/19).
