Mike Modano Expresses Interest In Buying Stake In The Stars
Published February 12, 2010
Stars C Mike Modano Thursday said that he "would like to have a role in any ownership group that ends up buying" the NHL club from Tom Hicks, according to Mike Heika of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Modano said, "I definitely would like to be a part of the team going forward, and that would be one option. But it would have to be in a smaller role" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 2/12). Modano, who has played his entire career in the organization since he was drafted in '88, said that he is "interested in becoming an owner because he'd like to keep hockey interest in Dallas at a high level." Modano introduced Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban "to a prospective ownership group and Cuban has said he is interested in becoming a minority owner" in the Stars as well (ESPNDALLAS.com, 2/11).
SECOND TIME'S THE CHARM? ESPN DALLAS' Richard Durrett suggested Doug Miller, who owns the Allen Americans, the Stars' CHL affiliate, could be a candidate to buy the NHL club. Miller was "interested in buying the club the last time Tom Hicks put the team up for sale" in '02. He declined to comment on the speculation Thursday. But Durrett noted Miller "is a hockey guy and he's local." He knows "plenty of folks in the area and certainly could look into forming an ownership group" (ESPNDALLAS.com, 2/11). The DALLAS MORNING NEWS' Heika noted Miller's name "keeps coming up" as a candidate to buy the Stars from Hicks, and it "makes sense." He is a "huge part of hockey in North Texas," also owning the Stars' AAA Midget team (STARTELEGRAMSPORTS.com, 2/11).
