NASCAR Sprint Cup Viewership Tumbles 7% During '09 Season
Published December 1, 2009
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this season averaged a 4.0 U.S. rating and 6.4 million viewers for its points races across four nets, off 7.0% and 6.9%, respectively, from a 4.3 rating and 6.9 million viewers last year. ESPN was the only network to see a gain in ratings and viewership from '08, as three of its four regularly scheduled telecasts produced increases. This year's 10 races in the Chase for the Sprint Cup on ABC averaged a 3.4 rating and 5.489 million viewers, down 8.1% and 8.3%, respectively, from a 3.7 rating and 5.986 million viewers last season. Below are average ratings and viewership across the Sprint Cup Series' four TV partners, as well as net-by-net comparisons from previous years.

| NOTES: Races that were rained out and run on a weekday are excluded from averages. Last season's figures also exclude the Chevy Rock & Roll 400, which had been scheduled for ABC but was moved to ESPN due to the threat of a hurricane. Last year's figures include only the broadcast (ABC) portion of the Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500, which had the end of the race moved to ESPN2 to accommodate an NBA playoff game. For broadcast network figures, ratings/viewership do not include any runover that went to cable networks. | |||
