Yankees' Brian Cashman Expects To Curb Spending For '10 Season
Published November 24, 2009
Yankees GM Brian Cashman "won't meet with the Steinbrenner family until next week to discuss what the team's 2010 payroll is going to be, but regardless of what they tell him, he won't make the same splash he did a year ago," according to Dan Martin of the N.Y. POST. Cashman said, "We spent a lot of money last year. We're not going to spend as much this year." He added, "I'm real pleased with the financial commitment we were able to make last year. It puts us in a much better position as we move forward." Cashman said that he has "not made overtures toward any free agents -- or even answered any agents' calls." Cashman: "We haven't game-planned yet. That's what we're going through. Once I get firm numbers, then I can go ahead and start putting ideas together" (N.Y. POST, 11/24). Cashman added, "The big picture is to be real efficient with how we allocate our resources. We're going to be very careful -- and careful doesn't necessarily mean slow -- to make sure we spend it wisely. If it takes a little extra time to put us in a position to be successful, that's more important than a rush job" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/24).
