NBC Planning To Air '10 U.S. Open Coverage In Primetime Again
Published November 10, 2009
NBC will broadcast a portion of the '10 U.S. Open live in primetime next year, as the net "tries to re-create the magic of 2008, when a standout performance by Tiger Woods helped generate five-year ratings highs," according to Jon Show of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. The '10 U.S. Open will be played at Pebble Beach Golf Links, which "accommodates a live prime-time finish on the East Coast," though "exact programming windows for 2010 were not available." Meanwhile, the USGA and NBC "have also discussed moving coming U.S. Opens in the Pacific time zone to prime time in the East." That includes the '12 U.S. Open at Olympic Club in S.F. and the '15 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay outside Tacoma. Show notes "none of the other three majors or the Ryder Cup can accommodate a live scheduled finish in prime time, based on announced locations through at least 2016" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 11/9 issue).
