This Week's Newsmakers: Umps' Blown Calls Mar MLB Postseason
Published October 23, 2009
THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers:
WIN: MSG -- The company’s multimillion-dollar deal with Delta adds to its coffers at a time when many leagues and franchises are struggling to find new sponsorship dollars. Sources peg the deal, which designates the airline as a top-level signature partner and includes nearly every marketing asset controlled by MSG, at upward of $6M per year. That money is a good start toward funding the company's $500M-plus renovation of its iconic Big Apple arena.
LOSE: MLB UMPIRES -- Poor umpiring has marred an exciting MLB postseason, leaving fans and media members clamoring for the expansion of instant replay instead of focusing on the dramatic on-field events. While BUD SELIG remains staunchly opposed to putting more than home runs calls under the auspices of replay, the uproar does cause one apparent change -- only experienced umps are scheduled to work the World Series.
DRAW: ED ROSKI -- The NFL’s long-awaited return to the L.A. market inches closer to reality this week after California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger inks a bill giving final approval to Roski’s stadium plan in City of Industry. But before putting shovels in the ground, Roski must find a team, and many in California are concerned that the new venue will poach one of the state's own franchises -- the Raiders, Chargers or 49ers.
