The NCAA yesterday reported that fewer than 25% of "all major collegiate athletic departments made money" during the '07-08 academic year. The NCAA surveyed all 119 FBS schools, 25 of which "reported overall profits" for the FY ending June 30, 2008, up from 19 in '06. While more than "half of all football and men's basketball programs finished in the black," only one women's basketball team made a profit (AP, 10/20).
THE ORIGINAL MAVERICK: Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban yesterday argued that steroid use "may benefit those recovering from surgery." Cuban addressed several hundred students at the Univ. of Pittsburgh and said, "I'll get killed for saying this, but I'm not so against steroids if they're administered under proper supervision and there is no long-term damage." He added that he "did not think there is widespread use of steroids in the NBA." Meanwhile, Cuban said, "I'm not buying the Pirates. I tried. (It's) not going to happen" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 10/21).
TRYING TO KEEP IT MELO: Nuggets F CARMELO ANTHONY was profiled by ESPN’s Lisa Salters on last night’s episode of “E:60,” and she noted while Anthony “has consistently put up great numbers,” he is also "known for a very public string of missteps that includes fights, drug charges and questions about his character." Anthony: "I'm tired of hearing that I'm a knucklehead. Mistakes happen, everybody makes mistakes." Basketball HOFer MICHAEL JORDAN in ’05 “spent a week with Anthony in Chicago to help him get back on track." Anthony said that the gesture "meant that I had somebody who was as powerful and as impactful as Michael Jordan to stand up and say, 'Regardless of what happened in the past I'm standing next to him.' From that point I took it as I can't let myself down, but I definitely can't let him down” ("E:60," ESPN, 10/20).
