Quote of the Day
"Compared to so many other businesses that are down by such heavy percentages, for us to be down only 6.5% is remarkable. It really speaks to the appeal of our game."
-- MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, on the league's drop in regular-season attendance (THE DAILY).

Twins' Dramatic Win Sets
Stage For MLB PlayoffsThe MLB playoffs begin this afternoon with big-market teams and a host of compelling storylines, and if last night’s thrilling AL Central tiebreaker game is any indication, the league could be in for a very good October. The Twins’ 12-inning victory over the Tigers draws a 4.5 metered-market rating on TBS, up 36% from Minnesota's tiebreaker against the White Sox last year. One AL exec says, "If you're advertising why you should watch playoff baseball, all you had to do was watch that game.” But not all the news is good, as play-by-play announcer Chip Caray is blasted by bloggers and on Twitter for botching a crucial call in the 10th inning, yelling “Base Hit!” on a fly out. Also, while last night’s game draws a record-setting crowd at the Metrodome, MLB ends the '09 regular season with its lowest overall attendance since '04, and 22 of the league's 30 clubs see a decline at the gate.
