Brand Passes Away After Nine- Month Bout With Pancreatic Cancer

NCAA President MYLES BRAND passed away yesterday afternoon shortly after 3:00pm ET following a nine-month bout with pancreatic cancer. Brand, who led the NCAA since '03, lived in Indianapolis and is survived by his wife PEG and adult son JOSHUA. Details of funeral arrangements are pending. Brand is the first NCAA president to die in office. Univ. of Georgia President MICHAEL ADAMS said that the NCAA Exec Committee "will immediately appoint an acting president, and eventually begin a national search for Brand's successor" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 9/17). USA TODAY's Steve Wieberg reports the NCAA Exec Committee, chaired by Adams, is "scheduled to meet" October 29. Speculation on a successor "falls on Adams and includes a number of other university presidents and chancellors," including Penn State Univ. President GRAHAM SPANIER, Univ. of Michigan President MARY SUE COLEMAN and Univ. of Hartford President WALTER HARRISON (USA TODAY, 9/17).
